Godetia (Clarkia)
Clarkia amoena | annual | spring
Godetia “Grace”, shell pink. A Clarkia hybrid that’s been bred for its lateral branching, it likes cool, dry temps and shuts down after the days go above 75 degrees. I fall planted these from plugs in Fall ‘21 and had blooms at the end of April this spring. It seems that they bloom according to day length, so planting earlier didn’t mean I’d necessarily get earlier blooms.
Here are my notes on this cutie:
• Fall planted into poor/sandy soil
• Struggled through the winter frosts (only a few) and the random warm spells we had
• Seemed extra susceptible to June bugs (you can see munch bites in photo)
• If harvested in swirled bud stage (like agrostemma), it had an amazing vase life. Two weeks out of cooler 🤯 IF I got to them before the bugs.
• Once cut, they held up to heat well, used these for my porch pickup jars and they were fine in 80+ degrees
• First blooms opened around end of April and had blooms til mid May.
I’ve been going back and forth on growing this one again. A florist friend @botanique_floral_artistry hinted that white variety might be in higher demand for florists 😉. What do we think?
