Larkspur

Consolida ajacis | annual | winter sown for spring blooms

Larkspur "smokey eyes"

Larkspur ‘Smokey Eyes’ blooming in May.

This was my first season growing larkspur, so I thought I’d do a little round up of my favorite varieties. For color, I loved Fancy Smoky Eyes and Misty Lavender (I think also sometimes called earl grey), but for productivity it was hands down Consolida regalis “White Cloud”. It sent up a tall center branch, with lots of little side shoots that could be used in arrangements, boutonnières, and low arrangements. I also grew the QIS blue mix which was beautiful, but I was just pulled to the grey/smoky purple colors more. I started these seeds in winter ‘21 (late Nov, they like a cold, dark start) and planted out in January. This year I might try to start them earlier if I can find a way to still give them that cold start.

I sourced Smokey Eyes and Misty Lavender from Johnny’s Seeds, and White Cloud from Uprising Seeds.
